God speaks to me . . . every day! Sometimes He speaks a word of conviction. Sometimes He speaks a word of encouragement. Sometimes He speaks a word of direction. Daily I hear God, usually through the Bible, but often in my spirit. Saint Ignatius called it: “Movements of the soul – thoughts, feelings or desires . . . given to us by God.” Read more »

We don’t remember the days of our lives . . . we remember the moments. One of the leaders I’ve watched experience transformational growth just described his experience as; “One of the single most significant moments in my life.”

Transformational moments can’t be predicted or manufactured. They happen suddenly and unexpectedly. While we can’t guarantee when they will happen, we can almost guarantee when they won’t happen. I’ve never had a marker moment when I was merely watching TV or washing my car. Read more »

News flash – you’re gonna die!Does that sound too blunt? If so, it’s time to face it and even to prepare for it. After several recent funerals, I’ve been thinking more about death. In addition, my reading of late keeps highlighting the brevity of life.

I just devoured a thought provoking book: “Preparing for Heaven” by Gary Black. Gary was a student of Dr. Dallas Willard and was given the privilege of interviewing Dallas during the final months of his life. Dallas talked often about a “good” death or a “radiant” death. By God’s grace, that’s exactly what he was granted. Dallas was even given a glimpse into what was awaiting him. He was deeply gratified to realize that “the huge crowd of witnesses” mentioned in Hebrews 12 was real and that they were ready to lovingly welcome him. What a gift to be given a peak behind the curtain! Read more »

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:1
What does it mean to “finish well”? One my of mentors loves to ask that question. Bob Buford has had an immense influence on me over the years. Bob made his millions in the early days of cable TV and determined to invest his life serving pastors of large churches. His mentor was the famed business leader, Peter Drucker, who once said to him: “Bob, your fruit grows on other people’s trees.” Read more »

“Do me a favor… send me your 25 best questions.” That’s all my buddy Cam asked from me for Christmas this year! So, here’s the list I just sent him and I’m now sending to you as well. It’s a gift I guarantee will keep on giving to you as it does to me!
My 25 best questions:
1. Are you faithfully beginning or ending your day reflectively?
2. What were the five things you were most grateful for yesterday? Read more »

“You talk too much …. !” That’s what she said. We were having a “marital debriefing” recently when Linda calmly but clearly said, “Sometimes you talk too much, and I talk too little.”
She was right. The very things that draw a couple together can at times irritate and exasperate them. However, once again our candid conversation helped to cement our commitment to communicate better as we partner in both love and life.
I’ve been learning a lot about communication lately. My colleague Dr. John Walker recently helped me to see that often the most powerful words I use are not those intended to persuade but to prompt. I’m learning to lead better with my questions than with my answers. That’s a rugged realization for a communicator who takes pride in persuasion. Read more »

I just came home to the silent treatment! I’ve been traveling this week and returned to find my wife suffering with total laryngitis. She’s typically very quiet, but this is remarkable. Read more »

Are you taking any extra precautions right now? These are uncertain times. Not a day goes by that I don’t read or hear something that gives me serious pause. The caution may be about our national security, the world economy or even the dire warning of some sort of “September Surprise.”
I’m not predicting an imminent catastrophe, nor is anyone that I know. Those who know the Lord know that we have nothing to fear. Ultimately, God has everything under control.
The issue is prudence, not panic. As I’ve cautiously raised this topic with others both locally and nationally here’s what I’ve been told: Read more »

In his book, Miracle Work, Pastor Jordan Seng reported that he recently went to the doctor with stomach pain.

“What do you do for a living?” he asked.
“I’m the head pastor at a church in town,” I said.
“Oh, then you have an ulcer.”
“Um, why do you say that?”
“Because every single pastor who’s come into my office has an ulcer,” he said.
“Seriously?” Read more »

This handsome young buck greeted me this morning as I pressed pause. We were both enjoying the beauty surrounding us, though I doubt that I was nearly as impressive to him as he was to me!
We try to begin every day slowly. For me, no day is complete without extensive Bible reading, followed by reflection adrenalinand journaling. When we’re in the mountains, the special blessing bonus is to enjoy another gorgeous hike with my wife for life. Read more »

"We were able to spend a week at Blessing Ranch Ministries. It was an amazing week! . . . . We learned SO much during this week. It was a great opportunity for rest, reflection, prayer, reading and seeking wise counsel. We were blessed beyond words! Each day we would have sessions with Dr. Walker, time to reflect, homework (a lot of reading), and amazing dinners each night. . . I grew so much in my personal faith journey during this week." Missionary, Dominican Republic
